Bombay Talkies - Movie Review

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Bombay Talkies is an ode to the 100 years of Bollywood by four of the best directors of Industry.

Interestingly the ode has nothing to do with the very essence of Bollywood – the ‘masala’ treat. The movie comes out as a surprise in a very unconventional way to create a charm, that is so very Non-bollywood way of entertaining us. Sure a surprise, a good one on that, with special thumps up to Karan Johar for breaking his own image of love-dovey movie maker.

1st Movie : Don’t get carried away by the first scene, thinking it’s the same “The plight of a gay” story. The story has amazing direction, flawless acting and tongue-in-cheek dialogues; and a simply so-very-unconventional way of putting things on plate, specially the way the movie ends. Life is rude but classy!

2nd Movie : The plight of Nawazzuddin, a person with a background in theatre, who gets a tiny tiny role in a Bollywood movie. He tries to perfect his role (and nobody even notices); does good and leaves before he gets his fees. Why? To impress his daughter with the ‘story of the day’ by making use of his talent that nobody else cared about. Dibakar Banerjee, the director, has adapted Satyajit Roy’s story and lives up to his greatness too. The movie leaves you wanting for more.

3rd Movie : Oh, the beauty of innocence of a male child who sees nothing wrong in wearing or dancing like a girl! No, he is not confused. He is sure of what he wants and finds nothing wrong in it. The most intriguing scene is when the boy, after getting slapped by his dad for cross-dressing, is talking to his sister. His awkward feeling, confused state of mind and innocence – simply brilliant! The movie ends with a stage performance by boy on a Katrina Kaif (his idol) item song. Don’t blink your eyes if you wish to see the transition of his audience’s behavior from ‘making-fun’ to ‘having-fun’ during his performance.

4th Movie : Yet another different story line! A son travels all the way to Mumbai from Allahabad to meet Amitabh on wish of his father. Why? Does he succeed? Then what? Well, you will have to watch to know! :)

All in all, a nice and new treatment from Bollywood to all of us. Since all the movies are somehow ‘different’ than the ones that we are used to; they make you fall in love but still give you a incomplete feeling – but then, may be, that’s the beauty of Bombay Talkies
