Dhanteras is just around the corner and most of us will surely be visiting a jeweller or Goldsmith. It is the day of Lakshmi puja and we bring a little essence of her at home with new precious metal. Amita Damani, a jewellery designer tells us — not just the precious metal but also certain designs are considered auspicious in our culture.

It is called the "Navratna" or “Navgrah" meaning 9 pure gemstones representing the 9 planets of our solar system. This combination is said to be sacred and royal in almost all the countries of Asia, regardless of religious and cultural differences. In Thailand, the Navaratna is officially recognized as a national and royal symbol of the king.

Meaning of the Navratna as written in Sanskrit quoted in the ancient “Jatak Parijata” chapter 2 —

Ruby for Surya (Sun),
Pearl for Chandra (Moon),
Red Coral for Mangala (Mars),
Emerald for Budha (Mercury),
Yellow sapphire for Bá¹›haspati (Jupiter),
Diamond for Shukra (Venus),
Blue sapphire for Shani (Saturn),
Hessonite for Rahu (the ascending node of the Moon)
Cat's Eye for Ketu (the descending node of the Moon),
...these gems must be high-born and flawless.

However, not just auspicious, if crafted well, navratnas look beautiful when adorned with traditional attires. Amita has tried various compositions.

Auspicious Motifs: Peacock or "Mayura" represents several meanings in our culture. It is said to be the symbol of Glory, Vision, Royalty, Spirituality, Awakening, Immortality and Refinement.

Gods' iconography in temple jewellery is another form. It is considered sacred too.
