Movie Review - Azhar

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Director: Tony D’souza
Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai, and Nargis Fakhri.

If you’re born in 1980’s, this film has all the elements for you to be entertained and get engrossed in this saga which is ‘loosely’ based on the most successful Indian cricket team captain! But does it really entertain? Is it engaging enough?

Well, even if we watch the film as a pure work of fiction, it is not engaging enough. If we treat it as a film based on real life events, then it totally looks like a forced attempt to give a clean chit to the player in discussion here!

You do get strong references in the happenings of the same time period like Sachin, Kapil, Ajay, Manoj, etc! You know who they are and you also know who this Azhar. Then there are two wives, the overly emotional grandfather, the fierce lawyer (Lara Dutta) to complete the masala of this cricket flick.

Emraan does a fine job as Azhar with his delivery and mannerisms. But the other cast fails to create any sort of impact. So does the script and the story which wanders at a lot of points and gets dragged.
The songs are a saving grace along with the production design that exactly creates the 80’s and 90’s era & the character dressing as well.

All in all, it is a dull account of the player and his life full of interesting events. But definitely not worth your time & money.
2 Shors out of 5!
