Movie Review - The Angry Birds Movie

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Director: Clay Kaytis, Fergal Reilly

Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Keegan-Michael Key, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage.

Plot: On an island populated with happy and flightless birds, 3 birds of diverse temperaments are social outcasts. When the mysterious green pigs arrive, it is up to these outcasts to find out what the pigs are up to.

The movie answers the age old question of why the Birds are so angry? A quaint and simple island is a habitat of the happy and flightless birds. Red, Chuck and Bomb are 3 social outcasts as their temperaments are not in line with this happy bird community. When the green pigs arrive from the Piggy Island, they pose themselves as friends and enjoy the hospitality of the unsuspecting birds. However, who are not impressed by their charm are the trio; Red, Chuck and Bomb. Driven by suspicion, it is now up to them to figure out what the pigs are up to.

The movie is a bubbly entertainer. Fans of Rovio and their popular game Angry Birds are in for a treat. As with most animated movies, it is filled with amusing one liners and jokes. Puns like the Mighty Eagle with the binoculars engaging in 'Bird Watching' and the board outside Red's newly constructed home that reads 'Home Tweet Home' put a smile on your face. The anthropomorphic presentation of the story is truly entertaining.

The Voice over actors do more than a decent job. However, the movie cannot be remembered for those. Protagonist Red, played by Jason Sudeikis puts a commendable effort  but does not quite hit the bull's eye in the bigger scheme of  things . A Saturday Night Live (SNL) veteran, it does not quite seem to help Sudeikis' career in Hollywood. Danny McBride and Josh Gad, as Bomb and Chuck, truly uplift the movie with supporting voiceover actor performances. Keegan-Michael Key voiceover as Judge Peckinpah is hilarious and bang on as his humour brand.

The events in the climax unfold in a manner that is reminiscent of the popular game. The pace of the movie is affable and the run-time crisp.

The use of 3D technology was unnecessary and not quite reasonable. With no spectacular elements in the movie, it would have sufficed for it to be made only in 2D.

The movie has enduring soundtracks by the legends of Rock like Ozzy Osbourne, The Who and Scorpions. Not to mention, the sound work of the movie, truly lends it a character.

The movie is not high on creativity and lacks an appealing story line. It is not at par with franchises like Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda which have an all pervasive powerful influence on the audience. Thus, Angry Birds makes for another production in the 'Most Forgettable Animated Movies Ever Made' list.

Not worth the hefty price of a multiplex ticket on the weekend, you will miss nothing if you choose to watch the movie in 2D. If you are a lover of animated movies, this entertainer will leave you suffused with joy.
