Movie review: Ae dil hai mushkil

Director: Karan Johar
Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma

Emotional cutlet by the heart, Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) accidentally meets peppy Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) at a bar and they both connect as if they are lifelong buddies. And that ladies and gentlemen, is the scripted start for yet another Karan Johar movie. With that sudden beginning of friendship one sits through cheesy songs sung by Ayan and Alizeh at posh locations, five-star hotels. They both roam around in private jets and it all looks like an ode of Karan Johar to his kind of cinema where being rich is basic.

While for Alizeh their bond is just limited to friendship but Ayan is already hit by the cupid. However, turbulence starts when Ayan comes to know that Alizeh is still not detached from her past relationship with Ali (Fawad Khan).

The rigmarole of emotions leads to Ayan's "heartbroken-but-ready-to-be-relationship" phase with Sabah (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). The screen presence of the aforesaid definitely rides the entire movie and few dialogues even strike the cords of heart. Essentially, the chassis of this film is a romantic quadrangle where in monogamy works as a cornerstone and romance, friendship remain immaculate.

Thankfully, ADHM being an adult drama doesn't get all loud or cloying, but the first half of the movie certainly turns out to be rife with cliches and predictability. Right from the onset of the second half, the trio shows the bandwidth of their craft and call for uninhibited attention from the audience. Aishwarya delivers one of the most interesting performances after her comeback, Anushka plays well on her field but most of all after seeing Ranbir's potential in Barfi, Rockstar, Tamasha, one does expect more from the actor who falls short because of bromide scenes.

For all its glamour, romantic entanglement, watch ADHM this Diwali but just without expecting anything phenomenal.

3.5 Shors out 5.
