Movie Review: Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Cast: Varun Dawan, Aliya Bhatt, Gauhar Khan, Girish Karnad, Akanksha Singh.
Director: Shashank Khaitan
Genre: Rom com
Duration: 2 hrs 19 mins

Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan) is the hot-headed, sexist son of a moneylender from Jhansi who takes life one day at a time. Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) is an ambitious, small-town middle class girl who aspires to pursue her goals rather than settle down to be married and have kids. Both meet at a wedding and Badri instantly falls heads over heels in love with her. Little does he know that the girl whom he wishes to marry is not looking forward to spending her life with anyone. Thus starts the Bollywood nok-jhok.

Badri starts wooing her with all his boyish charm, but she refuses to give in. Alia’s character Vaidehi is shown to be a strong woman who does not care about the society, peer pressure, social stigma or even the quintessential emotional blackmail that she faces back at home! The chemistry between the two is pure fire!

What happens next is typical of a ‘KJo + 90’s movie’ fusion. All the build up fails miserably post the initial fun ride. After several attempts by Badri, she finally falls in love with him and he changes to become a better person. Now they need to convince their families to get married and achieve a happily ever after. Cue - dramatic dialogues coming up. Even though the movie has a perfect balance of drama, humour and emotion, it fails to strike a chord with the audience, with respect to the plot.

The lengthy duration clubbed with no suspense or surprise elements whatsoever, make it difficult to sit through the entire running time without getting bored.

Bollywood absolutely needs to come up with love stories that are inspiring or at the least, different from the retro ages! If you are not a Varun or Alia fan, we recommend giving this a miss.

Rating: 2.5 shors out of 5!
