Movie Review: Half Girlfriend

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Vikrant Massey, Seema Biswas

Director: Mohit Suri

Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes

Mohit Suri’s command that stays faithful to Chetan Bhagat’s source material from his novel of the same name, Half Girlfriend give us some laugh-out-loud, felt moments, but ultimately got buried under by too much swelling music and doused melodrama.

The story progresses through Madhav’s (Arjun Kapoor) eyes and it’s mostly about his obsessive love for Riya (Shraddha Kapoor). The first half of the movie is still enjoyable because of curiosity but second half failed to sweeps us up in places because of the constructed-ness of the characters and the not-so-exciting storyline.

The chemistry between leads characters, Bihari Madhav Jha who struggles to speak English and fancy Riya Somani who he adores is confused, forced and takes the audience for granted. I was expecting more between the actors but the film reached its end leaving my cravings half way. There are scenes when it seems like the male protagonist’s half status might is growing into full, till female protagonist runs off again.

Arjun Kapoor’s efforts are visible through his expressions and changing beard length, but Madhav Jha’s character is not heroic and looks more like a creepy stalker. As for the part of Riya, any actress with college going looks could have pulled off this well.

Overall, it remains the story of a friend-zoned Arjun Kapoor who doesn’t know how to move out of a caustic relationship.  Suri’s flick turns out to be an absurdly dim fiction, irresponsible enough to lead on many future half girlfriends!

We give them 2 Shors out of 5 Shors!
