Movie Review: JAI GANGAAJAL

Attributes: Movie Reviews

Director: Prakash Jha
Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Jha, Manav Kaul, Rahul Bhat, Ninad Kamat

A sequel to the crime film Gangaajal, Jai Gangaajal was touted as a female-centric movie. Sometime into the movie and you realise it’s got less to do with SP Abha Mathur (Priyanka) and more about Bhola Nath Singh aka B.N. Singh (Prakash Jha). Appointed as the first female SP of Bankipur district in Bihar, the movie chronicles how Abha goes against the Bankipur MLA and the henchmen of the district.

These political backdrop movies are Jha’s forte. And this time too he does a fine job of creating a realistic set-up and vibe. However this also being his movie in front of the camera he seems to have gotten slightly carried away. There are too many issues being addressed and you’re left craving for more of Priyanka on screen. The movie is different in the sense of not beating around the bush. There are no light or forcefully infused romantic scenes. There’s all of one unnecessary song. Does that mean the story provides no relief to the audience? Well it depends on how you take it.

We give it 2 shors for being a movie that’s at least trying to put across the truth in some way with good performances. Could have been better? Definitely. Should you watch it? Yes, if you enjoy this kind of cinema.
