Nalsarovar –The Paradise for Bird Watchers

Attributes: Weekend Getaway, Around the City

Are you thinking about a weekend destination which is serene, beautiful and a bit adventurous, then please include Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary on to the top of your preference list. Nalsarovar is situated only 60 Km from the city of Ahmedabad, which is about an hour drive away. This is an exclusive hub of both indigenous and migratory birds.

Nalsarovar Sanctuary covers a lake and ambient marshes spread across 120 Sq. Km of area. This place is inhabited by over a 200 species of migratory birds in the winter season. Nalsarovar is titled as the largest Wetland Bird Sanctuary in Gujrat. Lately, this place has become a favorite halt for many birds from Central Asia, Siberia, and Europe. The place is known for its scenic beauty and serenity.

At the entrance of the Sanctuary, there is a vast parking area for the visitors. Apart from the entry fee, the visitors have to pay a certain amount for the boat ride.(Remember, you can always negotiate the amount with the boatman to get the best deal.) The Sanctuary opens at 6 AM and closes at 6 PM, yet, the best time for bird watching is early in the morning. The lake is usually calm and you will be able to spot on umpteen species of birds there.

Once you take the tickets for boats, you will be lead to the dock where all the boats are halted. Boating through the Nalsarovar Lake is an extra ordinary experience where the water is so clear, and you will be able to see the flora inside the water. Most of the times the lake is vast and calm, and before it gets too sunny, you may complete the boating too. If you are on right time at the place, you can even watch the majestic Flamingos, Pelicans, Seagulls, varieties of cranes, ducks, geese, kingfishers etc.

There is an island in the center of the lake, and the dhabas there serve you authentic Gujrati dishes at very nominal rates. As Nalsarovar is closely situated to Ahmedabad, it offers a wonderful opportunity for both the city people and tourists to enjoy the beauty of nature. Please remind to take your binoculars and a packet of pulses (for the birds) while you go.

What are you waiting for? This weekend take yourselves to Nal Sarovar and meet all new winged friends!
