So think, Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat (take your pick) with Google-like powerful apps, decides to record every single activity of every human, store it, analyse and make decisions and try and eliminate relevant timely issues?
THE CIRCLE is a movie based on the novel by Dave Eggers, circling transparency versus privacy. The director assembles impressive cast whose performances are powerful and convincing, but the movie as a whole fails to retain interest and weaves a rather confusing narrative, doing no justice to it’s source. Eggers co-wrote the screenplay yet it’s dull and unsatisfying.
With technology like TruYou, SeeChange and the sorts developed at The Circle, where complete transparency seems plausible.
Tom Hanks plays Eamon Bailey, the company’s power-hungry guru, charred with a need to posses more and more knowledge. His words of how privacy is theft and secrets are lies are worshipped by the employees. We have Mae Holland (Emma Watson) a naive woman who lands a job at The Circle and is mesmerised what the company can do, and craves to be a part of these social experiments. Her life, her friends and family’s lives are made public and are rated by peers.John Boyega playing Ty, roams like a ghost in the halls of The Circle passing moral and ethical judgements, who also informs Mae how the company possesses extreme power but all of it is unchecked. The film is a thriller that is devised in tech-house with guileless believers, evil founders and of all the lives monitored by them.
Ponsoldt fails to make this film as gripping and tasteful as his previous ones. As a satire it’s worth a few laughs, even has intriguing ideas and concepts that appeal the eyes but, falls flat with the flow and climax of the story. The National Book Award nominee novel by Eggers is far more horrific and intense.
Although, it’s not a bad one-time watch owing to the cast.
We’d give the movie decent 2.5 SHORS. Enjoy!
