Kolkata has many weekend getaways for all its wanderers. One such place is Sundarban, the natural habitat of the Royal Bengal Tigers. The word "Sunderban" is obtained from two words Sundari and Ban, which when put together means "the forests of sundari"-referring the huge mangrove trees.

The Sundarban National Park is the largest mangrove forest in the world. With an area of 1330.12 sq.km this national park has been recognised as one of the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Situated at the union of the two major rivers – Ganga and Brahmaputra, Sundarban holds to its credit the title of largest delta in the world.

For wildlife lovers and adventurers, Sundarban jungle safari is one of the most thrilling and exciting experience. The jungle safari is conducted through boat cruise which is one of its kind experience. Blessed with a rich flora and fauna, this Archipelago is a collection of 54 small islands. Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, Dobanki, Netidhopani, Burir Dabri in Sundarban has watch towers from where wildlife lovers can spot along with other wild animals, the great Royal Bengal Tiger popularly known as Dakhin Rai. Sunderban is the natural habitat for many rare species of animals like the Gangetic Dolphin, Snubfin Dolphin Estuarine Crocodile, Fishing Cat, Common otter, Water Monitor lizard etc. Apart from spotting animals, wanderers can visit the Sajnekhali bird sanctuary, Tina Kona Island and the mangrove eco garden are few major highlights of this beautiful place.

Honey collection is another major livelihood of the residents of these islands along with fishing, pisciculture and allied activities. The residents before venturing out in the forest to collect honey, pray to their powerful local deity popularly known as Bon Bibi for their safe return from the forest.

How to Travel: The best way to travel to the Sundarban National Park is to board the train from Sealdah to Canning and to travel by bus from Canning to Godkhali, Namkhana, Raidighi, Sonakhali and Najat. From Godkhali, Namkhana, Raidighi, Sonakhali and Najat there are motorboat services to this wonderful national park.

Where to stay: When it comes to accommodations, Sundarban has many hotels and resorts with state of the art facilities and some lovely spread of authentic Bengali cuisines.
