This Scuba-Diving Getaway Around Mumbai is a Must Visit!

Attributes: Beach, Around the City

If the scurry city is being a bummer for your wallet and mood alike, just hold your breath and indulge in a quick travel getaway. Over 500 kilometers away, the Malvan township awaits by an azure blue Arabian sea to balm you with its reposing experience. Widely known as Mumbai’s Mini Andaman, Malvan is one of the nearest places for scuba-diving from the city.

Malvan, widely known for its authentic range of delectable Konkan-style seafood is situated in the Konkan belt of Maharashtra. It offers incredibly pocket-friendly resorts with a splendid view of high-rising rocky mountains and crystal blue limpid waters. Some of Malvan’s famous inns are Hotel Chivala Beach, Sonchafa Motel, Tian Beach Resort and Sagar Sparsh. One of the best restaurants for Maharashtrian style Malvani sea food is the Atithi Bamboo shack-hotel. Located on the Chivla beach road, this modest hotel is bound to be booked out especially during weekends. My best advice to a foodie would be to not miss its fried prawns, pomfret fry, Sol kadi and the fish thali regardless of the waiting time.

After enjoying tranquil seas and adventurous treads across gorgeously green landscapes of this beach-destination, you can either ask your hotel manager for a scuba diving contact or head to the nearest beach. The Tarkarli beach, Sindhudurg fort beach, Vengurla beach and Chivla beach are some of the beaches that offer an adrenaline pumping desi scuba diving experience. With or without an agent, the cost of a half-an-hour scuba diving session should range between INR 600 to 1000. For an extra INR 50, you can also get underwater pictures clicked.

The experience of chasing colourful fish to their kingdoms accompanied by the blue-green embrace of serene corals, in the middle of the Arabian sea is sure to leave you spellbound. To avoid any discomfort such as skin itching, do ask the scuba diving agent to keep you away from even the slightest hint of swampy waters. If you are an absolute sea-lover, you can also spend time collecting shells, sea rocks, mini-conches and more on the white sand beaches.

Its transparent blue waters and rich sea life, makes Malvan an ideal scuba-diving weekend getaway from Mumbai. If you like exploring the city through its roads and local experiences, the first thing you would want to do is rent a scooter or a bike for easy maneuvering. If you still have a spare day or two, do visit other tourist destinations like Rock Garden, Malvan Marine Sanctuary, Tondavali Beach, Rameshwar Temple and Achari Beach as well!

How to get there?
You can either drive for nine hours from Mumbai or travel overnight by a bus to reach Malvan. Else, you can also board the Mandovi Express or Konkan Kanya Express from Mumbai CST station. These trains will approximately take 11 hours to drop you off onto that hidden sea-paradise city.
