Movie Review: The Mummy

Director: Alex Kurtzman

Genre: Fantasy/Action

Duration: 1 hour 49 mins

THE MUMMY aims at being the 2017 fantasy thriller with another new researcher, an ancient mummy and the inevitable war between the two. Under the Universal Pictures’ monster movie series, this one could have definitely been much more than a lousy continuation to the existent, thriller franchise.

Struggling to stand out in a heap of clichés, Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) is the charming rouge who steals antiques to sell them and make money. Accompanying him are his sidekicks, Chris (Jake Johnson) and expert Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) who clearly has a thing for Nick. The trio stumble upon the enchanting tomb of an evil Egyptian sorceress Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) who was buried and banished only to be awakened (heard of that before?).

What follows is the usual English dream of Hollywood saving the day (in London, this time). While the computer graphics is commendable and the zombie-mummy apocalypse had us gripped onto our seats, the awful storytelling overshadowed it all.

Sofia Boutella is effortless as the mummy a.k.a. monster turned seductress and she is definitely one to look forward to! While Russell Croweis convincing as the learned archaeologist, seems ill-fitted with the plot. Tom Cruise is absolutely the charming eye candy as usual who tries to save the sinking ship, one frame at a time. These different elements do not however contribute together in holding the viewer’s undivided attention for a long 1 hour and 49 minutes.

Although abysmal and slow moving, this can be a definite one-time visual treat for all Tom Cruise fans. Only if the storyline was in as good a shape as him. Sigh!

P.S: The scene where he comes back to life from death leaves very less to imagination!

Rating: 2 shors out of 5!
