A South Indian restaurant, Banana Patra has pitched up on Varachha Road and what we got to share a thing or two about it with you! Wander around and you will find yourself in one of the bylanes of South India. The photographic wallpaper depicts banana leaves and a Kathakali dance, local revelries, food, architecture, lakes, and many other pictures, highlighting authentic South Indian culture, adorn the interiors.

Gape all you want, but you have come here to eat. The food is overwhelmingly excellent. Apart from their staples (Dosa, Idly and Medu Vada) we recommend you to go for their special dishes as well. Masala Idly sautéed with mustard and curry leaves gave that spicy fragrance when chomped. We were amazed to see a bowl-shaped Appam. Soft and spongy in centre and crisp on the sides and the whole lot of coconut flavour gave that perfect Kerala-styled Appam. Thin, fluffy and lacy crepes, here comes another variety of dosa — Neer Dosa. Unlike the usual ones, this gorgeous white dosa is made entirely of rice and coconut. From the mains do pay attention to the accompaniments. Sambhar and varieties of chutneys (Chilli, Coconut and Tomato) will spoil you further. You are sure to devour it alone.

Okay, so we also tasted their staples. Rava Sada Dosa—Crisp dosa, yet we could easily gulp it down. Tomato Uttapam—Smashed tomatoes and garnished cashew nuts, not only made it look appealing but also enhanced the taste of the regular tomato uttapam. And the Family-sized Dosa, one must only order when there are three or more foodies to hog on it. Apparently, all their dosas are made in ghee or butter, they do not use oil. Indeed meticulous!  

If desserts are what you crave for, Banana Patra will serve you with mouth-watering South Indian desserts. Payasam, a kind of kheer, was flavoured with cardamom, pistachios, almonds and saffron. It was perfectly cooked with perfect taste and a perfect dessert to end your meal. We can only say that it was party in the mouth.  However, Pineapple Kesari is a level above all the dishes. A classic and authentic dessert will give you foodgasm. The colour, consistency is just apt to melt in our mouth.
